Two tiny houses are going under the hammer for a huge cause at midday on Saturday, May 18.
The one-bedroom, one-bathroom homes on wheels have been crafted by 20 of Christchurch’s tradies in training from the Ara Institute of Canterbury.
Ray White Ferrymead is proudly managing the auction, covering all standard agent costs, which means 100 per cent of profits from the sales will go towards funding 10 of the students to travel to Fiji for work with Habitat for Humanity to help build new homes in areas devastated by recent cyclones.
Ray White Ferrymead selling agent Eddie Spry said the tiny homes were “absolutely awesome”.
“From what I’ve seen in the past with tiny houses, I would say these are on par if not better,” Mr Spry said.
“The kids put a lot of passion into what they do and the quality of workmanship is higher than what you can expect on the open market.”
The group of teenagers worked two days a week for 12 months on creating the two 7.2m x 2.5m x 4.1m tiny homes, which include the likes of full double glazing and plenty of storage.
“It’s the first time they’ve built tiny homes,” Mr Spry said.
“Normally they build regular homes to sell at cost because they can’t be seen to make a profit. This is the first time they’re doing it for a cause.”
Viewings are at the Ara Institute each Saturday and Sunday, and Mr Spry said enquiry volume had been solid.
“We had 15 groups through over the weekend and we’ve had a lot of enquiries,” he said.
“There’s been quite a large diverse group showing interest, from those looking for a rental opportunity to do an Airbnb-style, to others owning a small block of land and wanting something like this to live in.”
