New Zealand actress Aidee Walker is cycling from Bluff in the Lower South Island to Cape Reinga in Northland as an initiative to raise awareness for mental health. There are a total of eight riders aiming to complete the 21 day journey, passing through 42 towns along the way.
Ray White Timaru business owner, Phil Smith, who is a major sponsor of the event said that many people had personal experiences with mental illness in their family and the Ride Out of the Blue is designed to create conversation around mental health awareness and to inspire people to get more involved in their communities when mental illness becomes an issue.
The Mental Health Foundation, who is receiving the funds raised on the ride, aims to create awareness through schools by providing children and adolescents with the tools they need to deal with stressful and potentially damaging situations.
At the conclusion of the Ride Out of the Blue there will be a variety gala held on Saturday 27th October at the Auckland Town Hall. There will be performances from Anika Moa and a variety of other guests to celebrate the ride.
