The Year 3 and Year 4 parents of Sumner School in Sumner, Christchurch hosted a fundraiser “SnowBall” on the longest night of the year to raise money for a new Year 3 and 4 playground. The fact Canterbury was in the grip of a severe southerly storm with snow all around made the “Snowball” theme even more appropriate. This was an extremely well organised event, with 280 tickets sold and almost everybody dressed in black ties and ball gowns.
Several local businesses contributed a range of items for auction, which included 4 laps around Ruapuna Race Track in a GT3 Porsche, weekends away in Queenstown and Tekapo, rounds of golf with a golf professional and much more.
Prier Manson Real Estate auctioneer, Craig Prier, commented “It was initially hoped that around $8-$9,000 could be raised from the auction but as the bidding heated up it became obvious that a lot more would be possible. From 13 lots a “cool” $17,000 was raised with fast and furious bidding for almost every item. We are sure the Sumner School community will be excited to finally get their new playground equipment up and running in the next few weeks.”
